September News
Welcome back to
school! I am looking forward to having an exciting time in music, and
learning new music with the students. As this month marks the 195th
anniversary of the penning of the lyrics to our national anthem, we will
begin the year by learning the “Star Spangled Banner.”
Here are some
highlights of what we will be learning this month:
Preschool
All the 3 and 4
year old preschool classes will have music once a week. We will start
by reviewing popular children’s songs. We will begin to be able to feel
the steady beat of music. We will also develop coordination by
following movement directions and moving to music.
Kindergarten
We will begin
by reviewing songs we learned last year. We will continue work on
singing in tune, and feeling the beat of music. We will learn a variety
of folk and patriotic songs. In kindergarten, we will begin to use
classroom instruments to work on rhythm.
Grades 1 – 4
We will begin
with learning the “Star Spangled Banner.” Grades 3 and 4 will be doing
group projects, illustrating the lyrics. We will also work on
liturgical music for the Sept. 14th All School Liturgy. 1st
Grade will learn the sung parts of the mass: the Gloria, Hosanna,
Memorial Acclamation, Amen, and Lamb of God. We will review the basic
elements of music and learn the musical vocabulary of dynamics, beat,
rhythm, melody, form and tempo. Later in the month, we will begin to
learn to play various classroom instruments.
