We enter November with Halloween behind us, and the holidays zooming
up in front of us! In the first two months of school, I have seen
tremendous changes and growth in your children. They have really
settled well into the routine of 5th grade and seem to
have adjusted well.
I would like to thank our homeroom moms who made our class Halloween
party such a success and a lot of fun for the children. The children
always look forward to this and I appreciate our brave moms who
chaperone the activities for the afternoon.
I would also like to thank the children of homeroom 205 and their
families for their generosity and help making sandwiches for the
PORT ministry, as well as for all the candy collected for our
sharing parish of St. Thaddeus. Your generosity is very much
appreciated by those receiving our help, and this is another way
that we can put our faith into action.
Besides the beginning of the holiday season, November also brings
parent teacher conferences and report cards. The trimester grading
period ends on November 19th and report cards are
distributed on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, November 26th.

Homeroom 205 Religion
Our theme in religion continues to be living our lives as Jesus
would want us to live them. We are all at St. John of the Cross
School for a very specific reason; that is, to integrate our faith
into everything we do. In October, we began by focusing on the
Gospels of Mark and built upon this by learning more about our
Church as a teaching Church. We have learned about our faith in
different ways and from different people. For our children, you, the
parents, are the primary teachers of their faith. It is you that
value the Catholic education provide by St. John of the Cross
School, and entrust part of their faith formation to us. This is a
wonderful gift you have given to your children.
As we identified the teachers in our Church, it is also important
that we take advantage of these teachings, and attending weekly Mass
is such an important part of this. We frequently use the Sunday
Gospels and readings to learn more about our faith, and the
teachings of Jesus Christ and the saints. We continue to focus on
the teachings of St. Paul and use the weekly reading from Paul to
learn more about him.
We finished chapter 11, The Teaching Church, in our religion book,
and the children were asked to visit the Archdiocese of Chicago web
site (www.archdiocese-chgo.org)
and our parish web site (www.stjohnofthecross.org)
to find examples of our church leaders as teachers and things our
church does to carry out these teachings.
As we move into November, we will be focusing on the importance of
the Mass in our lives. Partaking in the Sacrament of the Eucharist
is the essence of our faith. We will start chapter 18 the week of
November 10th.
Finally, I wanted to say how proud I am of our homeroom students who
said their written prayers, and the Prayer of St. Francis on the PA
during the month of October. These prayers were said with meaning
and with respect.
