October
27, 2008 #10
Our class will be visiting the
Book Fair in the Parish Center on Wednesday from about
10:00 – 10:30. You are most welcome to join us there at that time to
help your child pick out some books. (If we are a few minutes late,
please browse in the “shop” while we return from our all-school
election assembly.) If you are sending any money to school with
which your child may purchase books, be sure it is in an envelope
with your child’s name on it.
SJC’s mock Presidential
Election takes place this week! The faculty and Grades K-8 will
participate in both a popular vote and the Electoral College vote.
Our homeroom will be representing the states of North and South
Dakota.
In Everyday Math this week, we
will begin one of the more difficult second grade concepts: making
change from $1.00. I would highly recommend that the children
practice making change for purchases at home in addition to the
lessons we will do at school. To start, they should choose to “buy”
items that would cost under $1.00, but use a $1 bill to pay for the
item. Then they count UP from the cost of the item to $1.00 to
determine the amount of change they would receive back. Practice
counting change as well!
Please send two packages of
M&Ms (regular size) to school with your child on Friday of this
week. We will be using the M&Ms as a part of our Halloween Math
lesson on addition, subtraction, measurement, and data collection.
This week is Red Ribbon Week,
a week that is dedicated to drug abuse prevention. For second
graders, we will focus on staying healthy and saying NO to drugs.
Tomorrow please send your child to school wearing a “touch of red,”
such as red socks, a red headband, or a red ribbon. Willy the
Wildcat and members of the student council will also visit us this
week to talk about drug abuse prevention.
On Monday, November 3, our
school will attend the 9:15 liturgy to celebrate the feast of All
Saints. You are most welcome to join us in church. As is our
tradition when we participate in an all-school liturgy, we encourage
each student to bring a donation of non-perishable food for the less
fortunate. Food brought to the church vestibule in the month of
October will be given to St. Mark in Chicago, a parish with a strong
population of Puerto Rican families. Our church bulletin suggests
that, if at all possible, you might consider their ethnicity when
donating food, although any donations are greatly appreciated.
This week we will:
Spell the words
“who”, “its”, “now”, “people”, and “my”
Discuss using our
senses to make predictions and explore our world in Science. We
will participate in a “spooky” but harmless Halloween lab this
week…be prepared!!
Practice writing a
spooky story using descriptive adjectives.
Continue our
Monday-Thursday Book Clubs. We will focus on making story
predictions and using higher order thinking skills to analyze our
Halloween stories. All materials are due in the classroom on
Thursday.
Discuss St. Paul’s
Treasures of the Spirit in Religion. This month we are focusing on
how to be faithful.
Please Note…
We will have a
Halloween Party at 2:15 P.M. on Friday. Second Graders DO NOT dress
in their costume, but they may be out of uniform.
In anticipation
of Veteran’s Day, I would ask that you send in names of Veterans or
current service men and women that you would like to remember.
There will be a school assembly on November 11. More information to
follow.
Class Wish
List: Please send to school any children’s menus you come across
while you are dining out. We can use these in our Math class!
Finally, thank you to those of you who sent in new puzzles and games
to help during our indoor recess time. They have already been put
to good use!
Enjoy your week!
