Faith *
Knowledge * Discipline * Morals
Dear Parents:
We had a wonderful
Catholic Schools Week! We began our week with a beautiful
liturgy celebrating our faith. Each morning we started with
religious daily bites and read about a different saint each day
that had special meaning to our school or class. We created a
prayer chain and will continue with it this week. Students wrote
prayers for their friends, family, teachers, and priests – each
representing a ‘link’ that connects our community together. They
did a service project with their kindergarten buddies creating
bookmarks to go along with the books that were donated. They
created some wonderful essays on the theme for this year’s
Catholic Schools Week which was faith, knowledge, discipline,
and morals. We also attended the sixth grade puppet show. The
theme of each of the puppet shows had to do with the “Keys to
the Kingdom” of faith, knowledge, discipline and morals. This
year the Catholic Schools Week theme highlighted four benefits
of Catholic Schools, faith, knowledge, discipline and morals. At
the beginning of the year it seemed like it would be a challenge
to make these benefits kid-friendly, but I am happy with how we
were able to translate these throughout the week into some
exciting activities. Catholic schools would not be able to
thrive without the support of all of our parents. Many thanks to
all the parents that came in and supported our open house on
Thursday; to Mrs. Scriba for her Art in the Classroom
presentation; and for the delicious lunch provided by the Parent
Association for all the teachers on Wednesday.
The Invention
Convention this week was another exciting event. Students were
able to view some of the most innovative inventions that I have
ever seen at SJC! We continued with this in the classroom and
the class had to research an invention that had been created
over the past century. They are creating brochures on how their
invention had improved life and changed over time. We will be
creating a timeline with these brochures to see what decades
produced the most innovative ideas.
In math we
finished the unit five with the test on Wednesday and we will
begin unit six today. The corrected tests will be sent home this
week after we have reviewed them in the classroom.
The “EDM Family
Letter” for unit six is enclosed in the Friday folder. Be sure
to put it in a safe place for reference throughout this unit. In
Reading Clubs we are still working on our chapter books and will
wrap up these books around mid-February. We are focusing on
vocabulary and playing some games with these words. In science
we have started chapter eight which is about the Solar System.
This past week we focused on the Earth and the moon.
Tomorrow is our
February Continental Math meet. Students need to be in the
classroom at 7:55AM. Our Valentine’s Day party is on Wednesday
and each student should bring in valentines to exchange. We will
be decorating the containers for collecting their valentines at
school on Wednesday. Parent-teacher conferences are this
Thursday and Friday. Be sure to check the website to schedule an
appointment. This weekend on February 13th and 14th
our parish is hosting a Sharing Parish Expo. It is a wonderful
way to enlarge our vision of the relationship SJC has with eight
sharing parishes – both local and global. Also remember to send
in those worn out gym shoes for our “Heart and Sole” recycling
collection. Shoes can be sent in anytime this month. Thank you
for all that you do to support our school community. Working
together we provide good things for our children to last an
eternity!
Sincerely,
Mariann Orr
