HOMEWORKHomework is a means of communication between parents/guardians and the school. It gives the parent/guardian a chance to see what the child is learning and the type of work he/she is producing. It is a supplement to regular classroom instruction that provides students with reinforcement of concepts already presented and may also enrich the student with challenges and incentives for research. Homework may be in the form of written work, studying or reading for information. It need not be given every night in every subject.
Each teacher will inform the parents of class work and homework expectations as well as grading methods to be used in class. A typical amount of homework per grade that would be expected:
Primary 10-30 minutes; Intermediate 40-60 minutes; Upper 60-90 minutes
As homework is given purposefully to enhance student learning, it is important that it be completed on time. In the event that a homework assignment is not completed on time, in grades 4 –8, notification will be sent home to the parents regarding this assignment. The ASSIGNMENT AND FORM (signed by the parent/guardian) must be returned the following day. Three incomplete/missing assignments in any one subject area will result in a conference and creation of a homework plan. This plan may include a set time during which the student will be required to complete his/her work. This extra school time may be set before or after school or at recess. Having several incomplete and or/missing assignments can result in a lower grade for the subject area. If an emergency prevents the completion of an assignment, a note of explanation and request for postponement must be written by the parent/guardian of the student. An assignment can be postponed, but not omitted. The teacher will handle incomplete/missing assignments in the primary grades (K-3), on an individual basis.
When a student is absent, homework assignment requests are to be made at the same time the school office is being notified of the absence prior to 9:00 am. Unless other arrangements are made, the homework materials may be picked up in the school office between 3:20 and 4:30. Students absent for a single day will be given appropriate time to complete missed work. Students absent due to vacations will be given time to make up work missed at a rate equal to the number of days missed. Students absent due to prolonged illness/surgery will have ample time to make up their work. Provisions will be made with the teacher(s). LANGUAGEUsing foul, abusive, vulgar language or gestures is crude and has no place in a Christian learning environment. Verbally abusing or teasing another is not acceptable at any time. A behavior notice will be issued.
The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is open after school until 4:30, Monday through Thursday on full school days. Students are encouraged to utilize the LRC after school for homework, research, reading or quiet games. Computer usage will be at the discretion of the LRC personnel and Technology’s “Acceptable Use Policy” will be in effect. No food or drink is allowed in the LRC. Library Loan Policies Students in 1st – 4th grades may borrow up to 3 books at a time with a 2 week due date. Students in 5th – 8th grades may borrow 4 books at a time with a 3 week due date. All books may be renewed twice under most circumstances. Special note: Encyclopedias have a 1 day due date. Videos may not be renewed. Overdue Materials Overdue books/materials are the responsibility of the student. At the end of the school year, any student who has not returned all of his/her library books/materials may forfeit a portion of his/her SJC Day. Lost/Damaged MaterialsParents will be notified in writing of any library items that are or damaged. Students may, however, continue to borrow from the library. Because lost items often show up later in the year, no payment will be requested until the fourth quarter of school. At this time, parents will receive a written notification of the lost item with the cost of the replacement. Lost or damaged material will be assessed as follows: Lost: Books and Magazines – the current cost to replace the lost item. Bar-coded Manila envelopes (for magazines) - $1 each Damaged: Actual cost of repairing, rebinding or replacing the item, whichever is necessary.
Loitering in the school building is prohibited. Students arriving before 8:40 are not allowed in the building before the entrance bell unless they are expected by an administrator or teacher. A study hall is available in the LRC until 4:30 pm, Monday through Thursday on full school days. Students waiting for an after school activity which begins at 4:00 or 4:30 are to go to the LRC. In the event an after school activity begins after 4:30 students must go home & return at the appropriate time. LOST AND FOUNDOne of our goals is to teach the students responsibility. Each year many items such as sweaters, hats, gloves, gym uniforms, shoes, glasses, and jewelry are never claimed. All items must be marked with the student’s name. The LOST and FOUND container is located in the lobby on the second floor. We recommend that items of personal value not be brought to school. Items not claimed are given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
