Dear Parent/Guardian,
Enclosed are your child’s Terra Nova test results. The main purpose of using a standardized testing program is to provide the school with information which will strengthen programs to help the students learn. The Terra Nova results indicate student performance and mastery of specific content objectives as compared to students of their own age and grade level across the nation.
As you look over your child’s Home Report, please note the back of the sheet which provides you with information in regard to strengths and areas of need which may be helpful to you. Over the years, a student’s individual scores should remain within the same range (up to five points below or above last year’s score.) When evaluating your child(ren)’s test scores, it is important to consider the child’s motivation, physical and emotional state and chance to do his/her best on any given test day. Although a standardized test is generally a good indicator of how each student performs, this is not always the case. Each child must be viewed as a total student within any learning situation. Abilities cannot only be judged on standardized test scores.
Below is a table of St. John of the Cross Median National Percentiles by subject and grade level. If you compare your child’s test results with his/her grade level Median Percentile for each subject area, you can determine how he/she scored in comparison with his/her class. For example, the fifth grade Median Percentile, indicated in the table, is 87 in Math. This means that 50% of our fifth graders are above the 87th percentile and 50% are below the 87th percentile.
If you have questions concerning your child’s test results in a particular subject, please contact the teacher of that subject. S/he will be happy to speak with you.
